March 14, 2005. German snow baby prices have been rising since before Christmas, 2004. This is particularly true of the more unusual examples. One Chapter 10 piece sold for over $680, far over book value and probably a record high for Chapter 10.

| An ice skating gnome. He is in the style of those in Pic 14.69, that is, he is thin and wears a bloused, peplum top. The paint on this piece was fired on and will not wash off. He looks like he has had lots of practice. 2" | Except for the large googly babies, I have not seen an old black-faced snow baby before. It is difficult to judge the age of this composition one, but from the stamp on the underside of the cardboard, I would judge him to be from the 50s or 60s. The face paint looks original. 2" | We know why Rudolph's nose glows, but what purpose does this young giraffe's bell serve? This is the type of Santa that I call an "apprehensive Santa." 1.75" |

Cook & Peary porcelain pieces are very rare. The Peary
family members report having seen none. The faces of these two explorers are so similar
to those of the book piece, Pic 1.5, that I
feel they must have been made by the same company. The book pieces shows Peary's hand at the top of the globe. As represented here, he has clearly arrived second. The date on the actual "pole" is April 21, '08, the date Dr Cook claimed his victory. 4.5" |

| Three tiny gnomes enjoy a game of cards on a mushroom. The detail on this 2.5" piece is wonderful. Each playing card is individually molded, and three cards are molded on the top of the mushroom. If standing, each gnome would be only 1" tall. With so much detail, I wonder what the original price was. | Did Royal Mail trucks ever look like this? If you know, write, and I'll add your information to this caption. If it weren't for the lettering on the truck, I would describe this as "Santa in a fire truck." 1.5" | |

| The M&O no-snow snow baby skier Pic 10.142a makes himself useful! 3.25" | Snow babies shaped and painted like these are rare in my experience. The closest are Pic 10.92 and Pic 10.233. 2" |
