July 26, 2004 UPDATE: Prices of all snow babies have continued to fall this year. There are real bargains to be found on the internet now, but many good reproductions are also being sold as "old." (See the latest at: New German Snow Babies).

| This sweet little glazed imp or gnome is 2" tall. Like the little guy in Pic 15.48 and the pieces in the catalog picture, pg 239, he has horns -- but shaped differently. Unlike the catalog pictures, he sits on a base. What factory made him? | This Santa piece is a bit like Pic 13.45. The
closest catalog picture I could find is the one above -- surely the same
piece with the components in a slightly different arrangements and with a
friend for Santa. This example also has a hole in the base for greenery.

Three views of the same unusual and rare snow baby piece. There's no doubt about what's going on here, and, frankly, Santa doesn't look very happy about it. 2.25"

Two additional members of the Erphila
rabbit band shown in the new book, Pic 16.58. This brings the total to
six instrumentalists, which is possibly the full band. These two measure
3-3.25" also. Commercial: Collect (pictures of) the whole band! Buy the book! |

A tiny piece, only 1.5" total height. The clock reads 11:55, and Santa looks alarmed (no pun intended). Does he worry that he won't have time to finish his rounds? From his expression, I would call him an "apprehensive Santa," like many shown in both my books. Some apprehensive Santas were made by Weiss, Kühnert, but that doesn't prove that all were.

| Lifting a barrel is hard work. At last, a hard-working gnome! He appears to be a mate to the gnome carrying a watering can, Pic 14.62. Both wear these unusual hats. 1.75" |
Three bear band, and each looks nervous. Is this their first performance? Dressed to match with snazzy striped scarves, they've done their best to appear professional. 2" |
Compare this candle holder to Pic 14.26. The book piece is German, and this one may be an excellent Japanese copy. It is not new. 2"

The sweetest little devil you could hope for. He holds a pin dish -- or is it his supper bowl? Just 2.1" | Beautiful skating pair. Their clothing is sparsely sprinkled with very fine snow. The incised number on the base is followed by the initials G.G. The skating boy in Pic 7.69 has the same type snow, and his incised number is also followed by G.G. Hmmmm.... 5.25" |

Jim and I knew that in a book picturing and describing 1875 pieces, there
would inevitably be mistakes that we didn't catch. I am grateful to the
readers who have brought the following mistakes to our attention. Corrections to Mary Morrison's Big Book of Snow Babies: Pic 16.21 refers you to the wrong photo. The correct photo is Pic 10.213. Pic 7.56 The caption should say "chosen" not "choosen." In the chart at the back of the book: Pic 6.5a value should be $50- $100 Pic 7.95 is mis-numbered as Pic 7.94 The chart description is correct. Pic 9.7 and 9.8 -- The description are switched around. The rest of the information is correct. PLEASE, send other corrections you find. |
